Product Description

A marine mark may be approached by vessels using different radar bands. The DX-RACON-01 Dual Band brings X-band and S-band radar identification into one RACON, helping the project provide a coded reference for compatible vessel radars operating on either band.

The unit operates at 9300–9500 MHz on X-band and 2900–3100 MHz on S-band. When interrogated by compatible radar, it returns a configured identification response associated with the designated navigation aid. This makes it suitable for navigation buoys, lighthouses and fixed marine marks where both radar bands form part of the project requirement.

An integrated FRP housing, IP68 protection and a −40°C to +70°C operating range support marine installation. The 9–36 V DC input and RS485 interface provide defined power and connection requirements, allowing the radar beacon to be considered alongside the site structure, supply and other AtoN equipment.

DX-RACON-01 Dual Band Marine Radar Beacon X and S Band RACON for Buoys and Lighthouses IP68 FRP Housing

Give one navigation mark a coded identity for compatible X-band and S-band radar. The DX-RACON-01 Dual Band supports both operating bands, making it a practical choice when the project must accommodate vessels using either radar band at the same marked location.

Installed on a buoy or fixed marine aid, the RACON returns a configured response to radar interrogation. That response helps the mariner associate the radar indication with the designated navigation mark, adding an identification reference alongside the site’s visual marking arrangement.

The enclosure and mounting arrangement need to suit the location where the RACON will work. The DX-RACON-01 Dual Band uses an integrated FRP cylindrical housing with IP68 protection, intended for marine marking installations with the specified environmental conditions.

Consider the lower flange and cable-entry arrangement while preparing the buoy deck, fixed-beacon structure or lighthouse mounting position. Including these details in the layout helps the mounting surface, electrical work and available access follow the supplied equipment arrangement.

For a system-connected installation, assess the RS485 interface against the host equipment’s requirements. Connection through an external monitoring terminal depends on the integration arrangement and the functions confirmed for the project. The interface specification gives the team a starting point for that review.

Q1. Which radar bands does this unit support, and why choose dual band?

The unit supports X-band at 9300–9500 MHz and S-band at 2900–3100 MHz. It is intended for projects requiring coded identification for compatible vessel radars operating on either band, including sites where the vessel mix or project specification calls for both.

Dual-band selection broadens the supported radar-band coverage at the marked location. Compatibility still needs to be checked against the radar equipment and project requirement; the two supported frequency bands should be stated clearly in the purchase specification and reviewed during commissioning.

Q2. How does the RACON help vessels recognise the correct navigation mark?

When interrogated by compatible radar, the RACON returns a configured identification response. Supported codes include A–Z, 0–9, NW, NE, SW and SE. The response provides an identifiable pattern associated with the designated aid rather than relying only on its ordinary radar echo.

Select the code according to the project’s marking plan and the responsible authority’s requirements. Recording the assigned code in the project documentation also gives the installation team a defined value to confirm during setup and acceptance.

Q3. Can it use the existing power system on our buoy or fixed beacon?

The specified input is 9–36 V DC, with a typical 12 V DC supply. An existing site power system may be suitable if it meets the electrical requirements and has enough capacity for the RACON together with the other connected equipment.

Average power consumption is ≤2 W when the operating-to-silent ratio is 1:1. Use that condition in the power budget and include the actual settings, battery reserve and charging conditions. An external solar-and-battery supply can be assessed as part of the site’s power arrangement.
