Project Details

DM-860 installation and nighttime light observation at Matamoros Port, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Location: Matamoros Port, Tamaulipas, Mexico

Test Site: Waterfront quay

Product: DM-860 Solar Marine Lantern

Installation: Fixed pole-top mounting

Test Focus: On-site installation and light operation at dusk and at night

Project Background

Port navigation marks need a suitable light signal, a dependable power supply, and an installation arrangement that fits the site.

At Matamoros Port, the DM-860 was installed on an elevated waterfront pole for field evaluation. The installation brought the lantern into an actual port environment, allowing its mounting arrangement and illuminated operation to be reviewed on site.

The DM-860 integrates the LED light source, solar charging system and lithium battery in one compact unit. For waterfront locations, this design supports installation without routing a shore-power supply to the lantern.

On-Site Installation

The DM-860 was secured to a mounting plate at the top of the support pole beside the quay.

Its integrated construction keeps the lighting and power components together, reducing the number of separate items that need to be mounted. It does not require a separate solar-panel frame or external battery enclosure.

This arrangement can simplify installation planning where mounting space is limited, or equipment must be handled at height.

Light Operation at Dusk and at Night

The installed DM-860 emitted red light at dusk and at night, providing a visual navigation signal near the quay. Its 360° horizontal light output allows vessels approaching from different directions to observe the signal. With a maximum red-light intensity of 76 cd and brightness adjustable from 1–100%, operators can configure the light to suit local background lighting and navigation requirements. The lantern supports 256 adjustable flash characters to match the intended navigation mark and help mariners identify it, while an adjustable daylight threshold enables automatic day/night switching, reducing manual operation. An integrated 12.8 V / 20 Ah battery provides energy reserves for periods of limited sunlight, with the manual specifying at least 25 days of rainy-weather autonomy. The integrated solar power system eliminates the need for a shore-power connection, reducing cable installation work and the cost of external power infrastructure. Actual autonomy depends on light settings, communication activity, and local solar charging conditions.

Product Features Relevant to the Site
Integrated Solar Power

Built-in solar panels charge the internal lithium battery, supporting operation without an external power connection.

For quay-side installations, this can reduce power-cable routing and keep the equipment arrangement compact.

Configurable Light Signals

The DM-860 provides 360° horizontal light output and supports 256 adjustable flash characters. Brightness and daylight threshold settings allow the lantern to be configured for the intended navigation mark.

Bluetooth Configuration

Bluetooth enables technicians to query and configure lantern parameters through a mobile app within connection range. Settings can then be read back to confirm the required values during commissioning and servicing.

AIS AtoN Capability

The AIS-equipped configuration can transmit the navigation aid’s name, MMSI, type, and position to compatible AIS receiving equipment.

This adds digital identification to the visual signal. AIS reception verification is a separate part of commissioning and is outside the installation and light observations described in this case.

Project Summary

The Matamoros Port field test provided a practical reference for installing the DM-860 on a fixed waterfront support and observing its light at dusk and at night.

The integrated solar design brings the lighting and power system together at one mounting point, while configurable light settings support different navigation-mark requirements.

Dexonmarine will tailor each solution to the project’s mounting conditions, required light performance, communication needs, and maintenance arrangements.
